Beating the Heat

Author: Makenna Alexander

Ah, summer – a season of sunshine, outdoor fun, and endless adventures. It’s a fantastic time to relax in the sun with our four-legged friends, but as temperatures soar, it's essential to ensure our pups stay cool and comfortable. With a few simple tips, you can make sure your dog’s summer is as chill as a bowl of fresh water in the shade.

Water, Water Everywhere!

Just like us, dogs need to stay hydrated, especially when the temperature rises. Ensure your pet has constant access to fresh, clean water. Portable water bottles or collapsible bowls are perfect for long walks or trips to the dog park. If you're relaxing in your own yard, a kiddie pool may be the perfect solution for your pup! Remember, if you’re feeling thirsty, your dog probably is too!

Shady Business

Seek out shady spots for rest and play. Whether in your backyard, at the beach, or during a picnic, always make sure there’s a cool, shaded area where your pup can relax away from the direct sunlight. Trees, umbrellas, or doggy tents work wonders for creating the perfect chill-out spot.

Timing is Everything

Adjust your walk schedule to avoid the midday heat. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times for that game of fetch or leisurely stroll, allowing you and your pooch to enjoy the cooler parts of the day. Plus, it makes for magical sunrise or sunset bonding moments!

Paws and Reflect

Hot pavements can be tough on tender paws, leading to burns and discomfort. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. On those scorching days, grassy parks are your best friend, or you might even consider protective booties for your dog's delicate paw pads. Always check the pavement temp before taking your pup out for the day!

Doggie Paddles

Many dogs love a good splash, and what better way to cool down than with a swim? Always supervise water activities and ensure your dog can easily get in and out of the pool, lake, or ocean. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so consider a doggy life jacket for extra safety. Many parks in your area may have a beach, and allow dogs. Be sure to check some out!

Know the Signs

Keep an eye out for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or uncoordinated movements. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your dog to a cooler area immediately, provide water, and contact your vet if necessary.
